Prince Joseph ben Jacob ben Matthan – 'Joseph of the Bible'

Born in 29 BCE to Jacob ben Matthan and Cleopatra of Jerusalem, daughter of Cleopatra of Egypt and Julius Caesar.  This is both of their first marriages.

First child of Jacob ben Matthan and Cleopatra of Jerusalem, daughter of Cleopatra of Egypt and Julius Caesar.

  • Half brother to Ptoles and Cleopas.  Half sister to a girl named Miriame by a different mother, Eucharia.  Miriame is 6 years older than Joseph.

  • Nephew to Judas the Galilean and Hezekiah the Zealot.

  • Cousin of Judas the Zealot, son of Judas the Galilean.

  • Goes down in history as Jesus’ foster father.

  • Joseph’s father, Jacob ben Matthan was Patriarch of Jerusalem until 23 BCE when he was executed by Herod for sedition.  At that time his wife (Joseph’s mother), Cleopatra of Jerusalem, is married off to Simon IV Boethus.  Three years later, Cleopatra of Jerusalem, Joseph’s mother, becomes the 5th+ wife of Herod the Great.  Because Joseph’s father is executed, and because his mother is being passed around the block of royals, Joseph, his sister Miriame, and his two brothers are sent to live with their uncle, Prince Hezekiah in Gamala, Galilee.  Also sent to this ‘safe house’ is the youngest daughter of the recently executed High Priest, Yehoshua III, (H)anna, and her daughter Miriam.  (H)anna is married to Heli, but he fears for her safety and has agreed to the protection offered to his wife and daughter by Hezekiah.  Joseph becomes close friends of them.

  • Elizabeth is married to the priest Zechariah, and they have son named Jon the Baptist.  Jane/JoAnna has married Joachim, a Prince of the Onaidite dynastic line.  Two of his daughters will marry Joseph’s brothers, Cleopas and Ptoles.

  • Joseph is a legal and ranking Prince of Israel, since he is technically the highest ranking Davidian of his time as he is of the Abiudite line.  His father held this position before his death at the hand of Herod.
